How to stay on budget

May 27th 2016

Just because you have put yourself on a strict budget doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy some of life’s finer things.  To keep life fun while remaining on budget you need to start thinking of things that don’t require money at all or are relatively cheap and don’t break the bank.

Hosting an at home Dinner Party or Pot Luck

Okay, so going out to your favourite fine dining restaurant or wings every week might not be in your budget but that’s no reason to miss a fun night of food and drinks with friends.  Plan a pot luck dinner at home where your friends bring their favourite dish or drink and enjoy a night in that won’t break the bank like a $150 restaurant bill.   It’s a win, win. You get to enjoy fabulous home cooked meals with the same fun company you would have otherwise met at a restaurant.  Pinterest is just bursting with recipes for you to get cooking in your own kitchen at a fraction of the cost of eating out.

Free or Discounted Activities

Often times you can look through your local newspaper or search online for activities and events that are either free or offer some sort of discount.  You wouldn’t believe the amount of free activities that are going on right around you that you have never noticed before.  Go to the Zoo, a museum or theatre without paying the huge ticket price by checking out online websites like or in your local entertainment guide. You can get discounted tickets for all the activities you’ve been wanting to do but avoiding because they aren’t in your budget.  Make an evening of it by attending a pottery or painting class or spend time at the driving range with a 2 for 1 deal, all of them offering discounted prices.

Another way to stay active for free is to take part in local events or find destinations in your town or city that are free to attend such as farmer’s markets, festivals, or flower markets. Check out local parks and trails.  Especially this time of year, it’s a great time to walk around the city and check out all the beautiful trees and flowers that are coming into their Spring Bloom!

Step away from the TV

Nowadays with all of the online TV and movie streaming options, paying for a hefty cable bill each month may not be necessary.  There are other ways you can keep up to date with the latest shows through streaming sites like Netflix, Shomi or CraveTV just to name a few.  Paying for internet service and a small monthly subscription fee opposed to a huge cable bill can save you hundreds of dollars a month.

Better yet, skip TV and movies all together and pick up a new hobby, go for a walk or run, listen to music, read more books or get involved in your community by volunteering. Getting outside and active whether it is warm or cold outside is a great way to stay in shape and stay on a budget.
