With the rise in technology along comes the rise in fraudulent activity. It’s important that we keep our personal information including credit card information, mailing addresses or social insurance numbers safe and secure when online shopping, banking or using social media. Below are a few things to consider to keep your personal information safe from fraudsters online.
1) Change your passwords regularly. Not only should you be changing your debit card pin and your online banking password but also your email password. Many people use their email addresses to sign up or log into different online shopping accounts, but you then use your credit card information to pay for these online goods. Someone hacking a website, or your email address could easily get access to your personal information if they know the password for your email address. Another good tip, make sure your passwords are complex and them harder to hack!
2) Notify the credit union when travelling. Planning to use your debit card or credit card while on vacation? Make sure to notify your credit union or credit card provider of the dates you will be away as well as the location. This way your card will be blocked if it is used outside of these locations.
3) Sign up for Alerts through your online banking. With Member Savings you can sign up your account for different alerts & messages that are a great way to stay on top of your transaction usage. It’s the fastest way to find out if your account is being used by someone other than yourself.
4) Keep privacy/ security settings and firewall protections set on high. Make sure you are limiting the amount of personal information online, but if there are some sites that require your banking information, make sure you never save your passwords to autofill on these websites.
